GPA Calculation

There are two types of GPAs used in the North Pocono School District: Term GPA and Cumulative GPA. Term GPA is used in the middle and high school; cumulative GPA is used only in the high school. Both of them are weighted according to the score groups in which the courses exist. While unweighted GPAs do exist, they are currently not used for anything and do not display anywhere by default.

Term GPA

Sum of (the Weighted GPA Value of the rounded, whole number score earned in a course for the quarter multiplied by the GPA Weight of the course) for all courses in which grades are earned for the quarter

--------------------------------divided by--------------------------------

Sum of the GPA Weights for all courses in which grades are earned for quarter

  • The Term GPA is calculated using grades earned in a single quarter...it is not cumulative

  • At this point, the Term GPA is used exclusively as a determining factor for honor roll...it is used for no other purpose presently.

  • Some courses are not counted for GPA (Term or Cumulative) and therefore have a GPA weight of 0 (refer to the Course Catalogs in the menu above).

  • Weighted GPA Values are on a 100 point scale. To learn more about how whole-number quarter scores are converted to GPA Values on the 100 point scale (and to view the results of that conversion), choose the appropriate score group for the course in question from the Score Group menu above. If you are unsure of which score group is used for a particular course, refer to the Course Catalog in the menu above.

Cumulative GPA

Sum of (the Weighted GPA Value of the final average score earned in a course multiplied by the GPA Weight of the course) for all courses completed since entry into high school

divided by

Sum of the GPA weights for all courses completed since entry into the first grade level of the student's current building

  • The Cumulative GPA only accounts for grades in which a final average is earned. A Rolling Cumulative GPA can take into account quarter scores from the current year in which final averages are not yet available; it, however, is only a prediction of the cumulative GPA based on the available data.

  • At this point, the Cumulative GPA is used for class rank and certain awards.

  • Some courses are not counted for GPA (Term or Cumulative) and therefore have a GPA weight of 0.

  • Weighted GPA Values are on a 100 point scale. To learn more about how whole-number quarter scores scale) are converted to GPA Values on the 100 point scale (and to view the results of that conversion), choose the appropriate score group for the course in question from the Score Group menu above.
